billsguy:

i was there, just got home, great show.  no major surprises, but solid all around.  missed suicide girls, thought eodm might be first.  too bad, wanted to see them.  sebastian bach is a great opener, he just gets the crowd into it.  his great line was, " i went to the rock and roll hall of fame, and said, wheres the kiss stuff?  no kiss?  what the fuck?  at least i thought i'd see some boots or something" or something like that.  stepped out for eodm, but they just play dead on stage when i peaked in for a sec.  dunno what happened with them, but sg did come on for three songs around 11:10 or so.  guns hit around 12:00am.  played till 2:15 or so.  yeah axl said something like "lucky for us this is their last night!"  his monitor was fucked all night, kept putting it in, taking it out.  after taking bows, he took the mic, with a fairly full crowd out there, and said thanks again, especially since it "was a shit day, shit night with sound, but i tried hard and we had a great fucking time".  another time he said, "to all those who came to the show in 2002, cleveland and cincinatti were the two best (or two fo the best, can't remember) shows we played, and we are glad to be back."

he looked great, band sounded good, no "beautiful" solo, good solos overall.  great show all around!

EDIT: to the post above, i do agree to a point.  when i looked around during pc, the crowd was still strong, people dancing, floor still crowded.  sound was shitty at points, but i didn't see a single person on the floor leave till pc was over.  just my opinion

Chinese Democracy

« Antwoord #2 Gepost op: 26 November 2006, 13:58:18 »

adamsv1999

I just got back to the 'burgh from the show.  Overall I had a great time and the band sounded very good.  Here's some of my thoughts from the night....

I skipped most of the opening acts.  I caught the end of Bach's set and I thought he was pretty impressive.  He did a good job getting the crowd into the show and he sounded very good.  I caught a few songs of pigeons of shit metal and they were indeed terrible.  Great job by Axl of getting rid of them.  The Suicide Girls came back on for a few songs and they were just trashy....not much else to say about them.

GN'R hit the stage around midnight.  I think everyone here is aware of the crowd getting pissed about Axl going on late, especially last night so I'll leave it at that.  Jungle, ISE, Brownstone and LALD were awesome and the crowd was really into it.   The first four songs were probably the best part of the night for me due to the crowd energy and the anticipation.

The rest of the show was pretty solid although there were many times when we couldn't hear Axl at all.  I was about 15 rows back on the floor, middle of the stage.  The new songs really rocked but of course the crowd wasn't into them at all (no surprise, release the album already).  Everyone around me agreed that the new songs were good but complained that they shouldn't be playing so many new songs when no one knows them.  They were asking if Civil War, Estranged, Rocket Queen, etc were going to be played.  Oh well, I enjoyed hearing 5 new ones. IRS was probably the best of them.  Axl really put a lot of energy and rasp into it, even more so than Better.

The solos were good but really killed the crowd energy.  Fortus and Finck both impressed me.  Dizzy sounded good but his solo was long and really killed the crowd.  The Fortus solo was excellent and Ron Thal's was decent although by the fourth solo I was just hoping it would be over fast.

Everyone that I went with and the people that I was talking to on the way out all agreed that it was a very good (not quite great) show.  The sound problems and too many solos were the main complaints.  The new songs seemed to go over well even though people weren't familiar with them.  I have no doubt most people there would rush out to get Chinese Democracy.

This new band is definitely awesome and puts on a hell of a show.  I still don't understand the need for 3 guitarists (Fortus really impressed me) but I'm no musician and Axl & company know best.  I forgot Chris Pittman was even there most of the night until I heard a silkworms type buzzing during the beginning of November Rain.  Again, not sure why he is needed but he must play a bigger part in the new songs.  He did sound good on Madagascar though.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now.  For the most part I was extremely impressed and happy with the show.  Hopefully the next time I see GNR will be after the record is released and then everyone can really rock to the new songs.

The Eagles of Death Metal probably hadn't gotten the mustache wax unpacked from their suitcases before their maiden voyage on the S.S. Axl Rose hit an iceberg Friday. On the first night of what was supposed to be a three-week stint opening up for Guns N' Roses, the band was unceremoniously dumped from the bill after a chilly reception from the audience at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Following a well-received set by tour opener Sebastian Bach, the Eagles took the stage and, according to John Soeder, pop critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the band was met with "not deafening boos, but lots of grumbling and grousing and ... indifference."

While a handful of people were dancing along to the Eagles' good-time, sleazy garage rock, Soeder said it appeared as if the majority of the audience was not into it and was even a bit confused by the group. (Queens of the Stone Age singer/guitarist Josh Homme is a member of the Eagles, although he rarely tours with them and did not perform at Friday night's show.)

After a two-hour wait for the headliners, Rose came out and promptly dissed the Eagles, asking the audience, "So how'd you like the Pigeons of Sh-- Metal? Don't worry, that's the last show they're playing with us." And, just like that, the Eagles were tossed out of the nest.

The Eagles took the Rose kiss-off with their usual fistful of salt. "At first the audience refused to welcome us to the jungle, but by the time we took our final bow, it had become paradise city," reads a statement from the band released on Monday (November 27). "Although Axl tried to November rain on our parade, no sweet child o' mine can derail the EODM night train. We say live and let die."

"My impression was, and I don't want to belittle the GN'R fans, but they didn't really get the inside-joke quality of the Eagles ... or the facial hair," Soeder told MTV News about the handlebar-mustache look sported by Eagles singer Jesse "The Devil" Hughes.

"Axl seemed like he was in a bad mood," said fan Nate Harris, who attended the show. "One of the first things he did was kick out someone who was in one of the first few rows during the opening song. He came back to the 'Pigeons of Sh-- Metal' bit all set long." Harris said Rose also turned the sound man into a target, repeatedly glaring at him, and at one point calling him "useless."

"Sebastian Bach ... they ate up his hair metal hits from the '80s and the new stuff, which sounded like the old stuff," Soeder reported. "But the audience seemed to be confused [during the Eagles' set] as to who the joke was on. They like their metal unironic. Numerous songs slipped into falsetto, and if you're a purist heavy-metal fan, falsetto isn't good."

Harris concurred that the crowd bid the Eagles farewell with "a few boos, some spare applause, but definitely no cheering," and added that Axl concluded the night with a graceful thank you to the crowd for bearing with his bad day.

A spokesperson for Guns N' Roses did not return calls for comment and no announcement had been made at press time as to who will replace the Eagles The band cancelled its Tuesday night (November 28) concert in Milwaukee due to Rose "suffering from an ear infection and strep throat," according to the band's Web site.

"GUNS N' ROSES' manager Merck Mercuriadis has responded to the claims by the EAGLES OF DEATH METAL leader Jesse "The Devil" Hughes that GN'R bassist Tommy Stinson threw down his bass in disgust after Axl Rose went off on the EAGLES after Hughes and Co. opened for GN'R at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena Friday night (Nov. 24). EAGLES OF DEATH METAL took the stage in Cleveland to open the first of what was supposed to be 15 North American dates on the GUNS N' ROSES tour, but exited the trek after just that one performance following an onstage rant by Rose, during which he nicknamed the band "The Pigeons of Shit Metal" before informing his audience that the gig would be the EAGLES' last on the tour.

"When [Rose] called us the 'Pigeons of Shit Metal', Tommy Stinson took his bass off, threw it down and went, 'Fuck you, that's it!' to Axl," Hughes told MTV.com. "And then Axl picked [Stinson's] bass up and threw it at [him]."

Mercuriadis disagreed with Hughes' account. "There is no truth to either claim [that Rose fired a crew member or that Stinson threw down his bass] as evidenced by the fact that our crew remains identical to when the tour started almost six weeks ago, and to say Axl threw a bass at Tommy is pure fiction," he told MTV.com. "The EAGLES OF DEATH METAL were asked to leave the tour not only because GUNS N' ROSES' audience hated them and tore them apart but because they could not handle the response. They were supposed to play a 60-minute set but left the stage after 42 minutes due to the hostile reception. The facts do not support the image they are trying to portray, which is why they are attempting to put this spin on it."

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2006/11/30/updated-smoking-section-axl-vs-eagles-of-death-metal/

The Smoking Section is all too aware that our column, on stands now, features an item wherein Eagles of Death Metal’s frontman Jesse Hughes talks about how stoked he is that his band will be opening dates on Guns N’ Roses current tour. But, alas, how were we to know that on opening night Axl would hop onstage, refer to his opening act as the “Pigeons of Shit Metal,” and fire them on the spot? Are we not but mere mortals? If you prick us, do we not bleed? After the jump, read the inside scoop on what happened behind the scenes according to Hughes– and his theory as to why Axl flew off the handle (again).
Although he boasts friends on G N’ R’s crew and in the band — who welcomed him onto the tour with open arms — Hughes began noticing bizarre behavior upon arriving at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena last Friday. “Every employee had a face on like a Stepford Wife,” he told us last night from the San Fernando Valley studio where he’s currently laying down vocal tracks with Josh Homme for a new Queens of the Stone Age album. According to Hughes, when the Suicide Girls got onstage to open the show, the audience (“not a single kid there could have been alive when Appetite came out”) started throwing things at the Girls. “That was odd,” says Hughes. “We’re at a rock show and people are throwing things at hot, naked chicks! What the hell?” He add that when he and the Eagles hit the stage, they were met with some minor jeering, but it died down quickly.

Hughes — who claims that Axl arrived at the arena after the Eagles’ set had ended — tells us he was stoked to watch G N’ R from the side of the stage. Then out of nowhere, Hughes says, “[Axl] called us the Pigeons of Shit Metal and said, ‘You gotta feel sorry for them fellas because this is their last night on tour.’ I just started laughing. [G N’ R bassist] Tommy Stinson threw down his bass and walked off the stage. It was one of the most bizarre scenarios I’ve ever seen.”

Hughes has a few theories. “What seems to happen is, when he goes off his meds, you’re not Paxil Rose anymore, you’re Waxil Rose.” He also tells the S.S. about a conversation he had with Sebastian Bach, who has become a close confidante of Rose over the past few months. This is, we believe, the root of the drama: “I saw Sebastian Bach twenty minutes before we went onstage,” Hughes says. “And I accidentally called him Savage Animal.” Those who watched the VH1 reality series, Supergroup (with Ted Nugent and Scott Ian) may remember that Savage Animal was the band name Bach proposed for the group, for which Bach was subsequently (and mercilessly) teased. “When I said it to him, it was a casual burn, but I didn’t mean it in a bad way at all,” Hughes hedges. “I was trying to be like, ‘Savage Animal! I backin’ you, bro!’ But I guess it didn’t come off that way, because I couldn’t possibly have meant it.” Ergo, we suspect that Bach may have conveyed a less-than-glowing report to Axl about the Eagles.

The band quit the G N’ R tour the following day, and Hughes reports that he’s currently in a San Fernando Valley studio with Josh Homme recording some vocals for the next Queens of the Stone Age album. He also says he got some consolatory words of wisdom from Dave Grohl — Nirvana had an altercation with Axl at the VMA’s years ago. “Dave said, ‘Disappointment from Axl is like being knighted.’”

Exclusive: What Really Happened Between Axl & EODM?

One of the best battle of the bands of 2006 had to be Guns N’ Roses versus Eagles of Death Metal. To quickly recap, EODM were kicked off the successful arena tour after only one show, during which Axl famously knighted them the “Pigeons of Shit Metal” from the stage. And poof! A beef was borne.

The other opening acts who performed that fateful night — Sebastian Bach, the Suicide Girls’ Burlesque Show — didn’t have much to say about the feud from behind the scenes. But we at Rock Daily got one of the Suicide Girls to open up and give us her exclusive take on the whole sordid affair. “The first night that EODM played they played a really good show but they went on after Sebastian Bach and the crowd response was really really negative,” says Suicide Girl Reagan, who had been on tour with the troupe for the last few months. “It just wasn’t the right kind of music for the crowd that came out to see Guns n Roses. They were getting boo-ed through all their songs and they cut their set twenty minutes short and stormed off the stage. We [the Suicide Girls] went back out and did a second set to fill time. But the crowd hated us too and just wanted to see Axl.”

So what’s the real reason Axl kicked EODM off the tour?

“Axl fired them for storming off stage without completing their set in a very public manner,” says Reagan. “Axl is great. He keeps to himself for the most part but gave us a ride on his private jet one time . . . [He] sent champagne and flowers to our dressing room all the time and was so gracious to us and we’d love to tour with him again in the future.”

Way to lock down an opening slot for the Chinese Democracy tour in 2017, Reagan! Let’s hope you’re still up for it in ten years.
